¡EWireless City, Digital Life |
¡@¡@Taipei City has the broadest wireless broadband coverage
among major cities in the world. Approximately 4,000 access
points (AP) have been installed, allowing wireless access
for roughly 2.3 million people (roughly 90% of the city¡¦s
population). At present, 130 square kilometers have been
incorporated into the wireless grid, and we are working hard
to expand the network to cover Taipei completely, allowing
local users to go online anytime, anywhere.
¡@¡@We're on our way to become an "anywhere, anytime,
ubiquitous city".
¡@¡@The Taipei Municipal Government is also working on the
strengthening of network equipment and infrastructure. It
hopes that all organizations, schools, hospitals, and homes
will have access to high speed, high quality broadband
service. In today¡¦s world, people with access to the most
information often emerge as winners. The amount of
information accessible through Taipei¡¦s convenient network
helped make it an ideal choice for investors. |

| ¡EGoing Far with Information |
|
¡@¡@Taipei¡¦s wireless network infrastructure is aimed at helping city residents in
all aspects of their lives, including education. Information education begins
in elementary school. Microsoft selected Taipei as the location of the first
"School of the Future" in the world, while Cisco set up a network installation
school in Taipei City. This project attracted 79 companies in Taiwan. These
companies participated in the program and provided relevant training,
showing that Taipei's information infrastructure receive high marks in the
eyes of internationally known businesses.
|
|
¡@¡@Taipei City is also leading the way in the establishment of online "Intelligent
Library" near a local MRT Station. This library, which has no librarians,
encouraged the habit of reading among city residents and made
information readily available. |
| ¡EDigital City, Mobile Taipei |
¡@¡@As par t of its CyberCity Project, the Taipei Municipal
Government is implementing the new "Foundation and Phase
Plan," with "Digital City, Mobile Taipei" as its main focus. The city
government will create a "Cyber City, Digital Taipei" comprising
of seven main aspects including: information infrastructure,
e-government, e-business, e-life, information education,
reducing the digital gap, and a geographic information system.
We hope to make Taipei a truly digital city: No matter what you
are doing, your life in Taipei will be "digital" and "mobile." |
| ¡EBoasting a High Caliber Workforce |
¡@¡@According to BERI¡¦s Labor Force Evaluation Measure, in areas such as labor regulations, relative productivity, and work
attitude, Taiwan¡¦s performance is ranked among top five in
the world. For the three-year period between 2003 and 2005,
the performance of Taiwan¡¦s labor force ranked third in the
world.
¡@¡@Taiwan¡¦s labor scorecard is impressive, just like the
innovativeness and the invention capabilities of the
Taiwanese people. Both factors contributed to the global
competitiveness of Taiwanese products.
¡@¡@In 2005, Taiwan published 15,661 papers in important
scientific journals¡X making it 18th in the world ranking.
Among these, 11,661 papers from Taiwan were published
in engineering journals (11th in the world); 5,118 patent
applications from Taiwan were approved in the US, making it
4th in the world.

| ¡EFirst Rate Environment Becomes a Cradle of Talent |
¡@¡@Quality staff is the most important asset for any enterprise. Taipei
City has a highly-skilled workforce; these people help businesses
maximize potentials. Within Taipei City, there are 27 universities and
vocational schools, as well as several large-scale research institutes.
Approximately 46% of Taipei¡¦s residents have postsecondary school
degrees. With these kinds of qualifications, Taipei residents provide
businesses with top working talents, and give these companies a
cutting-edge.
|

|
|
¡@¡@The best universities, research institutes, and businesses in the
nation are concentrated in Taipei. Cooperation between academia
and private businesses serve to train individuals in both theory and
practical application. Abundant training resources help to create a
talented and skilled workforce, as well as attracting individuals from
other parts of Taiwan to work in Taipei. In recent years, people who
received advanced training in technology-related fields abroad have
been returning to Taiwan in large numbers. They are an nvaluable
resource for businesses in Taiwan.
¡@¡@The existence of a comprehensive educational system, options
for continuing education, and government incentives draw large
numbers of Taiwanese to Taipei City, making it an ideal training
ground for Taiwan¡¦s workforce. |
